Chronic Pain Control

Chronic Pain Control - Gareth Wait Hypnotherapy, Newport & CwmbranPain can make your life a misery. When you are in pain it is difficult to sleep, or concentrate, or even think about anything other than the pain. Apart from the pain itself, the ongoing discomfort can lead to anxiety, stress and feelings of helplessness.

Technically, pain comes in two distinct varieties: Chronic and Acute. Acute pain is actually very important to us – it’s the warning we get to let us know something is wrong with the body. A broken bone would cause acute pain. When the bone heals, however, the pain usually disappears. This is different to chronic pain.

What is Chronic Pain?

Chronic pain is pain that does not disappear – even if nothing can be done about the cause, or the cause is unknown. Acute pain that lasts for three months or more is also medically termed chronic.

Types of Chronic Pain

There are many examples of chronic pain, but among the most common are:

  • Persistent Headache
  • Arthritis
  • Back Pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Sciatica
  • Cancer Pain

How Hypnotherapy Can Help

The drugs used for pain relief in hospitals can be very expensive, so a lot of research has been done on alternative methods. The use of Hypnotherapy or self-hypnosis has proved to be remarkably effective.

One such study, from the Institute of General Practice and Community Medicine in Norway, studied using hypnosis for chronic widespread pain (CWP). The patients (all chronic pain sufferers) were split into two groups – both groups received normal treatment, but one group was also given hypnotherapy for 30 minutes, weekly. At the end of the study, all of the hypnosis subjects reported lower pain scores than the non-hypnosis patients. In a follow-up one year later, the hypnotised subjects were still reporting less pain than the other group.

In my experience, clients are often surprised at their own ability to control pain, and thoroughly enjoy the deep relaxation felt during hypnosis – something that’s usually missing from their daily lives. Clients learn how to turn down the intensity of their pain, safely and easily.
