But, there is another form of addict, one not so clearly obvious to the outside world, but the results are just as damaging to the sufferers and those close to them.
It is possible to become addicted to just about anything, but some of the more common invisible addictions include:
- Sex / Pornography
- Housework / Cleaning
- Social Media (Facebook, Twitter etc.)
- Computers (Games, Internet etc.)
- Shoplifting / Petty Crime
Although these issues are not obviously substance related, their hold over the addict can be every bit as strong as the hold heroin has over a drug addict. The main difference is that, unlike substance abuse, these invisible addictions are generally harmless when done in moderation. When they become excessive – that’s when they cause major problems.
Many sufferers recognise their addiction, and feel guilty or depressed as a result. Some even become angry or aggressive when someone points it out, while others will simply laugh it off.
Hypnotherapy and Addiction
Overcoming any addiction requires focus, hope and motivation. The client can provide the hope, and the hypnotherapist can help supply the motivation and focus.
The Psychotherapy part of Hypnotherapy is very important to the successful outcome of addiction therapy, helping the client find ‘triggers’ that he may not even have known were there, and help with the powerful visualisation of an addiction free future.
